New Grass!

June 4th, 2010 Posted by momitomi in Kids | View Comments

Well, we have been having some work done on our yard and we now have a big patch of green grass.  It was a really hard two week waiting period before we could use it, but now it is ready to go and Dylan and the dogs really enjoyed their first time out playing on it.  Dylan especially loves the sprinklers and he couldn’t wait to get out and run in them.  Luckily we have been having some warm days so he got to enjoy some time getting wet.

We still have a lot of work to do on our backyard, we have a swing set that needs to go up and we really want to get a nice new deck built.  We are just planning on working on it slow and steady until it is done.  We are very excited about being able to spend many hours out in the back yard this summer, and we hope to have many friends over to share it with us.

Gopher Snake

June 4th, 2010 Posted by momitomi in Kids, Tomi | View Comments

I had an errand I needed to run out and do this evening. So once Aubri was asleep, I figured it was a good time to go.  As I was getting to the bottom of the hill I noticed the people who live in the house that is on the lowest street corner were out in the middle of the street.  Before I turned I saw they had a pretty large gopher snake that it looked like they were trying to usher across the street.  I turned and pulled and over to the side of the road and went to see if they needed any help.  They said they had been sitting on their deck and had noticed something in the middle of the road and thought it looked like a squirrel.  He went and got his binoculars and then could tell that it was a snake that was coiled in middle of the road.  They saw a car go directly over it and then a bus soon followed.  They wanted to come down and try to get it out of the road.  I guess they got it to one side before I got there, and then it turned around and headed back into the street.  They said it looked determined so they just wanted to see it make it across the street.  I chatted with them for a bit and helped try to keep the snake moving in the direction of the sidewalk.  When it reached the side of the street however it turned and looked like it was going to head up the gutter in street.  Luckily they had brought a big box down with them and we decided it would probably be best to get it in the box and then drive it back up behind all the houses and let it go where it wouldn’t be near the road.  Where the snake was headed was in between the road and the freeway and there isn’t that much space for it to roam so we figured it would probably turn around and head back across the street and it is a fairly busy main street and it didn’t seem like it would be very safe.

I have had quite a bit of experience with snakes and we had been kinda pushing it along and it was pretty much ignoring us.  I have seen gophers before that coil and strike if you try to mess with them, and this one didn’t really seem to care that we were there.  So I decided I would grab it, I actually expected it to put up a little fight when I lifted it up, but it really didn’t struggle.  We put it in the box and then when we were trying to close it up, it almost got out but we were able to get it back in.  I put it in the back of the Mazda and threw a blanket on top of it.  The couple made sure I would be okay and I assured them that it would be okay and with the blanket on the box I didn’t think it would get out.

On my way up to let it go, I thought I would run by the house and grab Dylan to go with me because I knew he would think it was really neat.  So, I grabbed him out of bed and we drove up behind the house to find a good place to let the snake go.  Dylan was very excited but also worried.  When I told him it was a Gopher snake he though I said Cobra and I had to explain to him what kind of snake it was and that it wouldn’t bite him.  He was very excited to see it in the box, but when it started to come out of the box, he lost a little bit of his braveness and kinda stood behind my leg.  He really thought it was exciting though and followed it for a while until it turned and started coming toward him and then he thought for sure it was going to bite him.  We couldn’t keep it headed out into the field so I figured the best thing to do would be to pick it up and take it out as far as I could and let it go.  I gave Dylan the video camera because he wanted to take pictures of it and I took it out about as far as I could and let it go.  As soon as I did, it turned and came back toward me and I thought for sure it was headed for the street again, but it turned and followed another path away from the street so I think it should be safe now.  I ran and got Dylan so that he could see it disappear and say goodbye but we couldn’t find it once we got out there.  I really hope that it stays out of the street and has a long life out there.

Dylan is a 2-wheel rider

June 4th, 2010 Posted by momitomi in Kids | View Comments

Dylan and his bike day two - 66So, Dylan has been wanting to ride his bike more and more since they get to ride them at his school.  I figured he would probably be able to learn to ride his bike pretty quick and get his training wheels off if we just took him out a few times and gave him a chance to really learn to pedal.  We live on a big hill so there isn’t really any place to practice bike riding around us because he would probably just end  up flying down the hill.  I told Mike that I thought we should just take off his training wheels and see how he does.  Mike wasn’t sure but went along with my plan.  We went out in search of the most level ground we could find and Mike started working with him.  Aubri brought her scooter so she was busy scooting around on that.

Dylan took to riding his bike almost immediately.  Mike was pretty amazed and thought it would take a whole lot longer.  The next day I took him out and he was riding a park in SLO along a pretty long path all by himself.  Then later that day we took him to another park and he was able to start all by himself and was getting control of turning.  He still doesn’t use his brake like he is supposed to.  He thinks it is too funny to either run into things to stop or drag his feet.  I am very proud of my little man though, he did a great job!

Easter 2010

April 12th, 2010 Posted by momitomi in Kids | View Comments

This year for Easter we just stayed home and took it easy.  I was in a wedding the day before so we really didn’t have time to go anywhere so we just stayed home and had a relaxing day with the family.  The kids loved their baskets from the Easter Bunny.  Aubri received a hula hoop, kite, books, stick horse, a set to make a wooden beaded necklace and of course a chocolate peanut butter egg.  Dylan had in his basket a weaving loom, jump rope, books, kite, a dinosaur skeleton that had to be put together, a set to make a wooden beaded necklace and also a chocolate peanut butter egg.  The peanut butter eggs didn’t last long and the kids really enjoyed all the rest of their gifts.

Easter Bunny Pictures

April 11th, 2010 Posted by momitomi in Kids | View Comments

This year we took the kids to Santa Maria to see the Easter Bunny.  Lori, Kadin and Lexi met us there and the kids were all excited to get their picture taken with the Easter Bunny (except for Lexi).  We weren’t really sure how Aubri was going to do in her picture.  She wouldn’t get anywhere even close to Santa Claus this year so we really didn’t have very high expectations for what may happen.  She told us that she was excited to see the Bunny but we weren’t sure what would happen when she got close.  When it was our turn though she ran right up to the Easter Bunny and she wanted on his lap right away.  Dylan who is usually super relaxed in any situation was actually the one to give me problems.  When we got in line for our picture they gave the kids Easter Bunny ears.  When it came time to take the picture Aubri took hers off and handed them to me so I just grabbed Dylan’s also thinking that they would either both wear them or not.  Dylan refused to get up on the bunny’s lap until his ears were on so I had to run and go grab them for him.  We were actually able to get a picture with both kids looking at the camera and kinda smiling.  And as always the kids loved seeing Lexi and Kadin.

Meet Moppit

April 11th, 2010 Posted by momitomi in Kids | View Comments

Aubri and Moppit - 03

I have been thinking about getting a smaller dog for a while now.  We also had been talking about getting Aubri a dog for her 2nd birthday since we got Dylan Dodger when he was 2.  So, I happened to be looking online and I came across an adorable little dog at a shelter here in San Luis Obispo called Woods Humane Society.  We were out one day and I decided we would just stop by there and look at him.  He was really adorable and seemed very sweet.  I was able to lure Mike back out to see him and after spending some time with him, he agreed that we could adopt him.  We had to wait until the next day however because we had to bring back the dogs to meet him before they would finalize the adoption.  Moppit is an approximately one year old Tibetan Terrier/Havanese mix.  I had never really heard of either of these breeds before but basically they are both small non-shedding breeds.  When we got him home we realized that he was going to take some work.  Aubri absolutely loves him and he is very very sweet but you could tell that he had very little exposure to many things.  He constantly picks up the kids toys so we have to keep things very tidied up or other wise he can do damage to a toy pretty quick.  He also is awful about trying to steal food and he will just follow the kids around when they are eating something.  Other than a few bad habits, he has been a very fun dog and we look forward to him becoming even more a part of our family soon.

St Patrick’s Day Hike

April 11th, 2010 Posted by momitomi in Kids | View Comments

On St. Patrick’s day the kids and I were looking for something fun to do.  Dylan had been asking to go and hike Bishops Peek in San Luis Obispo for a while, so I decided it would be a great day to go and do that.  We only made it a short way up the side of the hill, but Dylan loved it.  Aubri wasn’t as sure but with her little legs I think she did a pretty good job making it as far as she did.  Both kids loved exploring all the plants and rocks though.  I think Dylan decided he was a rock climber and he tried to find the highest rocks he could find to climb up on.  I kept hearing the Little House on the Prairie theme song running through my head as I watched the kids run through the tall grass.  It was a beautiful day out and I am sure it will just be the beginning of our hiking as a family.

New Baby Goat at Avila Valley Barn

April 11th, 2010 Posted by momitomi in Kids | View Comments

The Avila Valley Barn had been closed since around Christmas time last year and it just recently re-opened.  The kids love visiting the barn and seeing and feeding the animals so we didn’t waste much time in getting over there once we heard it was re-opening.  We were lucky enough to be able to see a new baby goat that they have.  The little one couldn’t have been very old, it still had the umbilical cord hanging.  It was so adorable and we could have sat and watched it all day.  It was jumping and bucking and I decided that I am glad that I am not a mommy goat because that would take and unbelievable amount of patience to put up with.  Dylan decided he wanted to take the baby home with us and he was devising many plans to make this happen.  He thought we should come back and visit and he could bring his rope and lasso the baby out.  He didn’t seem discouraged when I told him the baby would miss his mommy and he wouldn’t be able to eat.  He figures if we just kept it for a few days it would be fine.  Aubri decided this trip that it is fun to feed the animals.  Last year she would just throw the food at the animals, but this year she was okay with them taking it out of her hand.  Of course when we visit the barn we also always have to have ice cream.  It is a really fun treat for the kids to go to the Avila Valley Barn and they just love it! Dylan’s Birthday at School

February 2nd, 2010 Posted by Mike in Kids | View Comments

Dylan loves his school that he goes to and could not wait to go the day where they were going to celebrate his Birthday. It had to be postponed once as Dylan was sick around the time of his birthday but the following Tuesday it was his day at school. Tomi made some really good gluten free brownies, so that everyone could enjoy them, that Dylan got to take and share with his friends at school. Tomi got to have Dylan sit on her lap and she told stories of Dylans life for each of his first 3 years. He seemed to really enjoy this and had a huge smile on his face the whole time. After that, the teacher put on the birthday crown and cape and walked him over the rainbow bridge. Dylan thought this was great and couldn’t wait to tell me about it when I got home from work that day. It was a great day at school and one I think he will remember for a long time.

Dylans Day at School

Dylan’s Birthday

February 2nd, 2010 Posted by Mike in Kids | View Comments

IMG_1727Tomi and I can’t believe that Dylan is already 4 years old. He is growing so fast and everyday he makes me laugh about something totally new. The way he sees the world right now is so cool, and I feel I’m learning from him as he sees things for the first time. Hes always had a great love and interest in ocean life and I hope to make this fourth year of his life the one where we can really begin totake advantage of where we live and help him explore the California coast.

His Birthday was on 01/20 and he decided this year that instead of doing a big party like he has in the past, he wanted to either do Disneyland or Monterey with the Family (looks like we are going to Disneyland later this month), with the one condition that he got to spend his birthday with his friends Nate and Braden. So that night Shelby, Dustin and the boys came over after everyone got home from work. Tomi and I made bean and cheese burritos at Dylans request.

But Dylan, Nate and Braden were so excited to get back to their wii nobody really ate anything. After many sword fights, table tennis battles, and a few frames of bowling we were able to lure them back to the table with an Ice Cream Birthday Cake from Doc Burnstein’s, always delicious. Wii wasn’t enough to pull them away from the table now. With Dylan turning four there was the perfect amount of candles to be licked by the three boys and Aubri. After making sure that every last bit of ice cream was off the candles they finished of the pieces of cake. Dylan has made great friends here and was very happy to share his birthday with them. You can see more pics from the “party” here.
