This year we took the kids to homeschool day at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. My dad was able to come with us and we also met our friends from the Zimmerman family there. We started the day off by taking BART into the city and then taking the bus the rest of the way. The kids thought this was a great adventure just by itself. Once at the Academy we started off with Dylan attending one of the workshops. He got to learn all about coral polyps and then build one of them. They used food materials in order to build their polyps so they got to eat them at the end. The Zimmerman family joined us in this workshop and it seemed like there were quite a few people who didn’t make it, so Melanie, Aubri and Ruthie were invited to build a coral polyp also. Aubri and Ruthie found that eating their building supplies before they had a chance to finish building was the way to go so their polyps didn’t last long.
After creating polyps was completed we went out to explore the rest of the building. There is a gorgeous reef area with sharks and rays in it and that was our first stop. After that we just ended up wandering along and exploring as we went. After a while everyone seemed hungry so we thought it would be a good time to get lunch. I think the kids enjoyed lunch time almost as much as everything else. We ate outside and the kids spent quite a while running in the grass and playing behind the bushes. After lunch we traveled back inside and went into this three story dome that had butterflies, plants, birds, and other animals inside of it. It was really beautiful and there were all sizes and colors of butterflies. After we were done in there we headed up to the living roof. They were giving a presentation using one of their resident owls when we got up there so we listened to that and took in the view from the top of building. Once we were done up there we explored a little more and finally ended our adventure with the kids running and playing while snow fell from the ceiling.
We had a really great time, and we were all exhausted by the time we completed our bus and BART journey back into Pleasanton where we were staying. We really hope to go back to visit the Academy again soon and we hope that Mike will be able to join us next time. More pictures from that day can be seen here
Today my friend Maurica invited the kids and I to meet them for some creek play at El Chorro Regional Park in San Luis. For those of you that don’t know this park, it is located out off of Highway 1 in between San Luis and Morro Bay. It was a really nice warm sunny day and the kids had a blast wandering through the stream and playing with rocks. Right now Dylan is very into collecting flowers and his favorite right now is sour grass. He spent most of his time collecting and making a sour grass bouquet. The other kids joined in with collecting and making their own bouquets after they were done playing in the water. Then we finished off the day playing at the playground before we headed home. We always have a great time with the Zimmerman crew and today was no exception! To see more pictures from this fabulous afternoon, please click here
This weekend we headed up north to the Bay Area and we were able to stay and spend some time with our friends, Josh, Amy and their daughter Alina. Alina was really Dylan’s first friend, and they haven’t been able to play with each other for quite some time. The last time we were all together Aubri was still pretty young and wasn’t able to join in the fun at all. We knew the kids would really enjoy playing together again and getting to know each other again.
While there, Mike had to leave for a little while and while he was gone Josh decided to dress Dylan up in his Giants gear. He convinced Dylan to put on the shirt by telling him that it said “I Love Daddy”. If Dylan had any idea it was a Giants shirt, he wouldn’t have touched it. He was all dressed up and ready to surprise Mike when he walked in the door. The first words out of Mike’s mouth were “take that off now”. Luckily I took some photos before Mike got back so we will be able to enjoy the moment for years to come. For those of you that don’t know, Mike is a hard core Dodger’s fan, so Dylan putting on the Giants stuff is about the worst thing he could have done. Even Aubri joined in the fun and got to wear a Giants shirt, but with Alina’s help she added her own touch with a princess crown. I decided on this post to put up a before and after picture. The first picture was of Dylan and Alina meeting for the first time, and the second is a photo from them this trip. It is amazing how much they have grown. I had an errand I needed to run out and do this evening. So once Aubri was asleep, I figured it was a good time to go. As I was getting to the bottom of the hill I noticed the people who live in the house that is on the lowest street corner were out in the middle of the street. Before I turned I saw they had a pretty large gopher snake that it looked like they were trying to usher across the street. I turned and pulled and over to the side of the road and went to see if they needed any help. They said they had been sitting on their deck and had noticed something in the middle of the road and thought it looked like a squirrel. He went and got his binoculars and then could tell that it was a snake that was coiled in middle of the road. They saw a car go directly over it and then a bus soon followed. They wanted to come down and try to get it out of the road. I guess they got it to one side before I got there, and then it turned around and headed back into the street. They said it looked determined so they just wanted to see it make it across the street. I chatted with them for a bit and helped try to keep the snake moving in the direction of the sidewalk. When it reached the side of the street however it turned and looked like it was going to head up the gutter in street. Luckily they had brought a big box down with them and we decided it would probably be best to get it in the box and then drive it back up behind all the houses and let it go where it wouldn’t be near the road. Where the snake was headed was in between the road and the freeway and there isn’t that much space for it to roam so we figured it would probably turn around and head back across the street and it is a fairly busy main street and it didn’t seem like it would be very safe.
I have had quite a bit of experience with snakes and we had been kinda pushing it along and it was pretty much ignoring us. I have seen gophers before that coil and strike if you try to mess with them, and this one didn’t really seem to care that we were there. So I decided I would grab it, I actually expected it to put up a little fight when I lifted it up, but it really didn’t struggle. We put it in the box and then when we were trying to close it up, it almost got out but we were able to get it back in. I put it in the back of the Mazda and threw a blanket on top of it. The couple made sure I would be okay and I assured them that it would be okay and with the blanket on the box I didn’t think it would get out.
On my way up to let it go, I thought I would run by the house and grab Dylan to go with me because I knew he would think it was really neat. So, I grabbed him out of bed and we drove up behind the house to find a good place to let the snake go. Dylan was very excited but also worried. When I told him it was a Gopher snake he though I said Cobra and I had to explain to him what kind of snake it was and that it wouldn’t bite him. He was very excited to see it in the box, but when it started to come out of the box, he lost a little bit of his braveness and kinda stood behind my leg. He really thought it was exciting though and followed it for a while until it turned and started coming toward him and then he thought for sure it was going to bite him. We couldn’t keep it headed out into the field so I figured the best thing to do would be to pick it up and take it out as far as I could and let it go. I gave Dylan the video camera because he wanted to take pictures of it and I took it out about as far as I could and let it go. As soon as I did, it turned and came back toward me and I thought for sure it was headed for the street again, but it turned and followed another path away from the street so I think it should be safe now. I ran and got Dylan so that he could see it disappear and say goodbye but we couldn’t find it once we got out there. I really hope that it stays out of the street and has a long life out there.
Wes Anderson probably ranks a very close second to the Coen brothers when it comes to my favorite film makers. So a few months ago when I found out that he had made a children’s film, I was so stoked that I would be able to take the kids to see a movie that I knew they would enjoy but would also have some of the craziness that is Wes Anderson that I would love also. We saw it today and I think he pulled it off very well. He took a Roald Dahl book, the guy who wrote Charlie and Chocolate Factory, and made it his own. I have never read the book but from what I have read about this film he stayed pretty close to the original while adding his trademarks to it; great sound track, almost uncomfortable dialogue, perfectly framed shots, etc… The stop motion animation was nowhere near as polished as what you see with Tim Burton movies but it gave the movie an almost vintage feel that I think added to the whole vibe of the movie. When we left everyone said they enjoyed it, which to me is the perfect kids movie. Dylan enjoyed it for the cute furry animals that talked, and Tomi and I really enjoyed all aspects of the movie. I know not everyone loves Wes Anderson, hes kind of an acquired taste, but I think this is the one film of his that everyone will really enjoy. So go check it out.
My mom had a couple of days vacation that she needed to take, so we figured we would take the kids and head to Disneyland. Mike luckily was able to get the time off also, so he came along. We went up on Thursday morning and stopped by to have lunch with Grandma McDonald on our way through and ended up hitting Disneyland around 3 o’clock.
The first ride Dylan wanted to go to was Buzz Lightyear so we headed there first. When we got in to get on the ride Dylan got a little scared, I don’t think he really remembered everything from last time. It took him most of that first ride to really get the idea of the whole thing again, but as soon as it was over, he was ready to go on it again. Aubri wasn’t sure about the ride, and she really didn’t seem like she liked any of the rides the whole time we were there. The only ride she seemed like she really wanted to go on was Dumbo and that was only after Dylan and Grams got on the ride and she was left standing on the sidelines because we figured she wouldn’t go on it. We had a lot of fun, but it is amazing how few rides you actually get to do when you are there with young kids and you have to go on their time and deal with multiple potty and snack breaks. Dylan did go on the roller coaster in Toon Town again and he really enjoyed that. I tried to get him to go on Thunder Mountain Railroad with me, but he didn’t seem so sure about that. Maybe next time I can convince him to go on it with me. One of the highlights we found by accident was getting to ride in the very front car of the monorail in with the driver. You get a great view of the whole park looking out of the front window, and it was really neat at night to be able to get to see all the lights from the park as well as all the lights from the hotels. Both the kids really enjoyed this part of day.
We have realized that Dylan is much more of a daredevil than we used to think. He doesn’t really seem to let heights or speed bother him. When Mike took Dylan on the Jellyfish ride, he was much more nervous to go up high then Dylan was on the ride. Mike kept a tight grip on Dylan even though was hooked in, and he checked his seat belt several times before the ride started. Probably everyone’s favorite ride was Toy Story. It is a great ride and it is really interactive. We just had a hard time getting either of the kids to keep on their 3D glasses so they could get the full effect of the ride. They also had both of the parks all decorated for Halloween and it was really neat to see all of the pumpkins and Halloween related decorations all over. Since we all have season passes now, we are already planning a trip to head back around Christmas time so we can see the park all decorated for Christmas. Click here for more Disneyland Pics.
